The Sip & Savor benefit to raise funds for the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation attracted the curiosity of Mexico and the entire world in the weeks leading up to it, with followers waiting to find out who would be the first to eat the world’s most expensive taco, and to witness the world’s most expensive bottle of tequila opened for the first time.
The event took place at Grand Velas Los Cabos resort on Friday, April 28th. Guests were invited to arrive at 7:00 p.m., and were welcomed with a cocktail reception serving signature beverages designed exclusively for the grand event.
A selection of gourmet tacos designed by Chef Juan Licerio – creator of the star Taco of the evening – was served to the more than 230 attendees, accompanied by Ley .925 young, reposado, añejo and ultra-añejo tequila.
What began as a raffle culminated in an auction, as the winning ticket was in the name of the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation. Organizers then decided to auction off the dish, starting the bidding at $500 dollars. The mood of the guests was apparent, and bids were raised to a winning $7,000 dollars, offered by Mike Patterson.
Once the winner was determined, the preparation of the taco began, broadcasted live from the kitchen to the event and on the resort’s official Facebook page. The taco was prepared with the finest domestic and imported ingredients, including morita chile from Oaxaca; 24k gold from Taxco; Baja California lobster; corn, edible flowers and vegetables from Los Cabos; European truffle and foie gras; Iranian caviar and Kobe veal imported from Japan.
The official figure raised from ticket sales and the auction of the dish was $27,960 dollars, setting precedents in the region in terms of social responsibility; a fact that was gratefully received and lauded by attendees.
